World Health Organization Confronts Major Staff Cuts Following US Funding Pullout

The global health organization has announced intentions to cut its staff by almost a fourth – totaling over 2,000 jobs – by the middle of 2026.

Funding Shortfall Triggers Substantial Reorganization

The decision follows after the United States, previously the agency's biggest donor, withdrew funding earlier this period.

Washington was contributing about eighteen percent of the organization's overall budget, causing a significant financial gap.

Expected Staff Reductions

Based on internal estimates, the workforce will decrease from 9,401 posts in early 2025 to approximately seven thousand and thirty by June 2026.

The decrease of two thousand three hundred and seventy-one posts includes job cuts, employees retiring, and regular attrition.

"This year has been one of the toughest in our history, while we undertook a challenging but necessary journey of prioritization and realignment," stated the agency's director-general.

Budget Gap Persists

This Switzerland-headquartered body now faces a funding shortfall of $1.06bn for the 2026-2027 biennium, amounting to nearly a fourth of its total funding.

The figure marks an improvement from a previous estimated gap of 1.7 billion dollars noted in spring.

Excluded Finances

These budget projections exclude an additional 1.1 billion dollars in potential funding from ongoing discussions with multiple contributors.

A spokesperson for the agency noted that the present unfunded part of the budget is in fact lower than in previous years, crediting this to several reasons:

  • A smaller overall budget size
  • The launch of a fresh donor outreach effort
  • An increase in member states' required contributions

This restructuring initiative is now approaching its end, paving the way for the agency to progress with a renewed structure.
