The England manager Questions Home Fan Atmosphere Following Comfortable Wales Victory.
Thomas Tuchel voiced his sadness that the England team did not get more encouragement from the home crowd during their impressive 3-0 friendly victory on Thursday night.
Tuchel was satisfied to see his side showcase their winning momentum, with goals from Morgan Rogers, Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the first 20 minutes settling the game. Yet, he was unhappy with the mood at the iconic venue.
“With limited sessions to get ready against a drilled team and we performed excellently,” the coach remarked. “It could have been 5-0 up at half-time. We couldn’t score the fourth and fifth goals. It was quiet. We didn’t get support from the crowd. We did everything to win.”
“How much more can you deliver in the first quarter? We didn’t let them escape. When you only hear just the Welsh supporters for half an hour, it’s disappointing because the squad deserved more support today.”
“I maintain this statement. We cannot do more than leading three goals up in a rivalry match. I would have wished for a bit more support in periods where it is challenging.”
“In the second half, to support us, there was a bit too much support for Wales. It could have helped us to regain energy, but that’s the way it went and that is it.”
Selection Choices Vindicated by Display
Away from risking a fight with supporters, Tuchel also caused a stir by leaving out Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden from his squad. But the move was validated by Rogers impressing again in the No 10 position and getting his maiden goal for his country.
“He plays his game,” Tuchel said. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is fighting for his position.”
Wales Manager Seeks Improvement from Defeat
The Wales manager expressed hope that Wales, who face Belgium in a important qualifying match on next week, learn from their awful performance in the opening period.
“That’s the reason I scheduled this match,” the manager commented. “I wanted to assess our standing. Where do we want to go? Who do we want to be? This performance fills me with motivation.”
Fitness Worry for Watkins
Watkins was taken off at the break after clattering into a goalpost and will be a doubt when the national team play their next opponents in Riga in a qualifier on Tuesday.
